Questions You’ve Been Wanting to Ask a Plastic Surgeon (Q&A)
From finding the right procedure for you to what to expect after surgery, there will always be questions that arise when it comes to plastic surgery. For Dr. Hayley Brown of Desert Hills Plastic Surgery, education to her patients and the community is very important. MYVEGAS had the opportunity to ask Dr. Brown common questions associated with the procedures her practice offers, and we are sharing her answers with our amazing readers!
Q: What is the most common procedure that patients request at Desert Hills?
A: The most common procedure requested is a Breast Lift surgery or Mastopexy. Many patients fly into Las Vegas from all over the US to have me perform a breast lift. Most patients find me online or by word of mouth within the community. Our extensive before and after photo gallery influences them the most in deciding to come to me for their surgery. Breast lift surgery has become very popular and is often part of “mommy makeover” surgeries. Women with large sagging breasts benefit from breast reduction surgery. A breast reduction is the same as a mastopexy with the removal of extra tissue. A breast lift can also be combined with breast implants to increase cup size for more upper pole fullness. Breast lifts are also commonly performed after breast implants are removed to tighten and lift the remaining breast tissue.
Q: How do you and the patient decide whether a procedure is the right one for them?
A: Listening to a patient’s goals and desires is the essential first step. I spend time educating the patient about possible procedures, cost, and discuss their expectations to make sure the patient is realistic about what can be achieved. I go through the individual’s health history to make sure the patient is free from any major medical conditions or risk factors that would make surgery more risky. An exam along with a logical explanation of options and alternatives helps patients decide what to do.
Q: What attributes create the perfect candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
A: Mommy makeover surgery involves variations of breast and body contouring procedures in one stage. For the breasts, options include breast implants, breast lift, or breast reduction. For the body, a tummy tuck or liposuction is performed. Because these are longer cases, the patient must be healthy, finished childbearing, a nonsmoker, close to normal weight, and not of advanced age.
Q: Many questions arise after the surgery has been completed, i.e., complications, is it supposed to look like this, etc. What is a common question you receive after surgery?
A: There are many questions patients ask before and after surgery. Communication with our patients and anticipating questions pre-operatively are essential so patients are fully prepared and can focus on recovery. Questions about diet, activity level, medication, dressings, garments, bras, and aesthetic concerns are common. Surprisingly, one of the most frequent questions I get is, “When can I have sex?” Patients are typically cleared at four weeks post op. Sex is like exercise. Any type of exercise increases heart rate and blood pressure, which can increase risk of bleeding, swelling, bruising, or disruption of the surgical site.
Q: Is recovery more difficult when having multiple procedures done at once rather than just one?
A: It depends. It could be similar or more difficult. For example, if someone is having a tummy tuck, she will be recovering from the invasiveness and downtime associated with this bigger surgery. Adding a small breast lift or liposuction of another area does not really add much additional down time. Similarly, if a person is having a facelift, adding a simultaneous brow lift or eyelid surgery does not add much to the recovery of their facelift. In general, longer procedures under anesthesia are harder to recover from. Surgery should be kept efficient for a safe outpatient recovery. An example of a more difficult recovery would be a tummy tuck along with a breast procedure, such as a breast lift with implants as there can be significant discomfort from both surgical sites. Pain tolerance varies from patient to patient. Regardless of the surgery performed, some patients are strong, tolerate pain, and recover quickly and easily. Other patients may be sensitive and have a hard time recovering no matter how minor the procedure.
